Child Abuse

Every single day we go through the same routine. Many of us want something interesting to happen. We don’t know that we are the lucky ones, whose days are boring. Children all around are being abused and even they can tell you that their days are never boring.

Child abuse has been going on for centuries. Back in the 1800’s, the earliest report of child abuse was filed. Children have been sold into slavery for millennia, sent to wet-nurse where many of them died, beaten very severely and frequently by parents, teachers, priests and bosses who used leather thongs, whips, belts, switches and canes. Children have been routinely swaddled nightly, rendered unable to move and develop their motor skills and explore their environment. Children were frequently tortured by mutilation, freezing, burning, shaking, throwing, branding, hot wax, and by dipping in cold water. Children, most often little girls, have been intentionally and systematically malnourished. Children were and still are left unsupervised. The daughter of Cotton Mather fell into a fire when she was left alone. An 18th century physician said that "almost one half of the human species perish in infancy by improper management and neglect".

One of the methods used to terrorize children and force obedience is through the horror stories told to them, which include threats that ghosts, monsters, god and the devil are out to GET them, torture them, cook and eat them alive. Bogie men lurk in every closet and under every little bed. The tales by the Brothers Grimm as well as the words to most songs and rhymes told to children often include plague, torture, rape and the capture and murder of children. To this day adults seem to take great pleasure in terrifying kids with masks and stories and monster sounds. The real Bogie Men are the adults who harm children. In the past children were taken to hangings and to see corpses to frighten them into obedience. During The Burning Times, the children of accused witches were made to watch their parents being burned at the stake, and were often severely whipped while they witnessed these brutal murders.

There have been many ways to try and prevent child abuse. In 1983, a petition was created and finally was passed to decree that April would become National Child Abuse Prevention Month. But, still one out of three kids in the U.S. is abused every day. Some don’t even make it to the age of 15. Whatever the United States and the government do is worth nothing to the children that are getting abused. They have no help from the outside world because their parents keep them isolated or frighten them so much that they are afraid to even say a word. There are many physical signs that a child is being abused. They have bruises or welts shaped like an object, bruises in unusual places, and burns in the shape of an object, rope burns on ankles or wrists and adult sized bite marks, are signs of physical abuse. Emotional side effects can be noticed also. If someone is apathetic, if they are depressed most of the time, if they won’t take part in small activities, and if they are hostile or aggressive suddenly, are all signs are emotional affects from abuse. One in three girls and one in five boys are sexually abused by an adult at some time during childhood. Families with four or more children have higher rates of abuse and neglect, especially if their living conditions are crowded or they live in isolated areas. More than 80 percent of abusers are a parent or someone close to a child. One in thirteen kids with a parent on drugs is physically abused regularly. One out of ten babies born today are born to mothers who are abusing drugs. So many different ways of abuse have the same outcome. Those outcomes are mental or physical deformity when they are older or premature death.

So much abuse is going on and we don’t even realize it’s going on. What have we become? What has America turned into?

Non Fiction Response

In the article: Back to the Tap?, the author Nicole Controneo shows the number of bottled water consumption over teh past year, per person. It states that from 1988 to 2008 the amount of bottled water a person consumes in a year has raised from about 7 gallons to about 28 gallons. That's a lot of water. The author is trying to broadcast the fight for the environment by writing about the amount of bottled waters used per year, per person. We don't always properly dispose of our bottled water and there is a very big concern on everyones minds.

We need to help our envirnment in any way that we can and this article is an eye opener. Some people are over using their ideas by planning protests to protect our earth but they don't need to go that far to convince some people. I am already convinced on not using that many bottles of water. People need to open their eyes to the things around them because if they don't get a little push it will be too late for their help.

Our enivornment is what keeps us all alive and well. We need to protect it in any way that we can. Think before you act, especially when helping our earth.

What does it mean to be loyal?

There are many ideas that we can think of when someone says that they are loyal. Some are dogs being loyal to their owners and another is people being loyal to their homeland. Being loyal menas that you are standing by them. That they are not going and turning against the people that they follow. The people who are loyal to the country or group that they are a part of do not turn their backs on that group of people. The people are loyal to them by doing the tasks that the people in charge appoint to them. Being loyal also means that you do not do the opposite of what they swear either to do or not to do. Being loyal is not turning back on the people who promise you something or not break a promise that you swore not to tell anyone. Keeping loyalty is one of the key components in being loyal. You are loyal to your parents by doing what they ask. Most of the time anyway, and not revealing private matters to the public. Being loyal is a quality that you don't want to leave behind and you don't want your inloyalty to catch up with you in the end.

Stolen Day Essay

The Analysis of Stolen Day

The Analysis of Stolen Day

In history there are many tragedies that lie with the bodies of little children. Some are physical diseases and early death incidents. Most adults deny the accusations of these pains that are taking place. Like in the story “Stolen Day” we see a boy who not only has pain within his body but also within his heart.

“Stolen Day” by Sherwood Anderson follows the view of an average teenage boy. There is a worry among the people who live in his small town of a bodily disease that they call inflammatory rheumatism. During school the boy starts experiencing signs of the disease that has also possessed a boy named Walter. He starts thinking to himself that this disease is indeed going to take his life. That the pain within his bones will be too much to handle. Not every physical disease kills but it can hurt gravely. He also starts to think that no one will even care if he is dead somewhere. That he will not be missed by anyone. Most kids in that time period, even now do think that they are not good enough for their families and that they will not be missed. He is afraid that people will not believe him if he tells them about his new discovery. This boy that we are following within the story is in a state that no kid should be in. Denial.

Within the state of writing there are four modes to choose from. This story is an example of man versus society. The boy is afraid of what people will think of him if he does broadcast his theory of the illness. Because his family ignores him most of the time he doesn’t tell them. Instead he goes to a place where someone in his state always is. The creek. Down there he does accomplish something but once he goes back to his family he is afraid of being judged. A lot of people are afraid of being judged by others. He is scared so he just blurts out his theory of the illness and runs away to his room. Society is defiantly not on his side today. It will never be either.

Throughout our lives, even as adults there are lessons that we learn. Some of those lessons come from stories. The hidden lesson within “Stolen Day” is not to be afraid. You shouldn’t be afraid of telling people if you think that there is something wrong. You should tell people what’s on your mind and what you theories are before it gets too bad. That there is nothing that anyone can do about it. Don’t be afraid to start admitting to others and yourself that something defiantly is wrong with you either mentally or physically. There is nothing to be ashamed of if there is something wrong with you. You’ll get through it. Everyone has their own inner strength and during situations like these it always starts to creep out of the cracks.

The author of stories ahs two key components to their writing. One of them is their style. Sherwood Anderson uses an illness within a boy to describe the past and the present. The past for many unexplained illnesses and the present for the neglect of children. The unexplained illness for this story is the inflammatory rheumatism that occurs within the bones and joints. Neglect in children is for the boys thoughts. He thinks that he is going to die and that people will not even care is he is dead. That they won’t waste the time to go and look for him if he doesn’t return home. The components that Anderson uses makes the story more real and even more sad than it normally would be.

The way a story gets its pizzazz as some people say is the author Sherwood Anderson was born in 1876. Because he had to work part time he did not have the time for school, like the character Walter in his story didn’t have the time for school because of his illness. He became a successful business man by being the manager of a paint factory, while in his spare time wrote fiction. Surprising everyone in 1912 he left his hometown of Elyria, Ohio to Chicago to pursue his writing. In 1919 his book Winesburg Ohio was published. He also had a great influence on writers such as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Anderson was and still is an inspiration to all and it’s revealed within his writing.

Many authors follow either the same mod line or use the same type of mode. “Stolen Day” has a similarity between the story, “The Necklace.” The main character is at the peak of her life. She has a glorious husband, a good social status but she still wants more. Something bad happens to her by losing her best friends necklace and her whole world turns upside down. She ends up poor and with a very bad social status. The woman and the boy from both stories have society fighting against them. They cannot win against their own society. Society is against them for the rest of their lives. Just like all of us.

Writers tend to mostly follow one way of writing. But Sherwood Anderson chooses to mix it up a little. His story, “Stolen Day”, is a comedy based mode line but with tragic events in it. One tragic event is the boy thinking that he has inflammatory rheumatism. The day is still normal with a few conflicts here and there. The boy is aching but once he surprises his family by bringing home a carp for dinner it’s starting to slow down a bit. Sometimes in writing you don’t’ have to be the same. You can stand out too.

Within a purpose of a story is either a literary significance or a historical significance. “Stolen Day” is based off of history. Back near around the 1800’s where this story takes place there were a lot of unexplained illnesses often only happening to children. Most of them were illnesses that dealt with the bones and joints of the body. Others were sudden deaths of children not only by illnesses. But by drowning or sudden accidents that could not be prevented. History within our writing helps us learn from our past at a different perspective. Within the eyes of another.

We can learn a lot about us by reading and learning about the past from books such as “Stolen Day.” The stories that we read can help us overcome even the toughest obstacles in life because of a character in a book can do it, so can you.

Willow Essay

Willow

There are many tales of adventure and bravery used to teach us lessons about life. They teach us many things on how to use the aspects of life that we now have. Many people have created ways to broadcast those aspects to the world. The movie, Willow, shows us what a tiny man can do with a big heart and a lot of determination.

Willow Ufgood is a Nelwyn in the movie Willow. A Nelwyn is a dwarf or a little person. When his children find a baby in the river he tries to protect them even though his wife says that the baby is no harm. But when the giant creatures that are wild, mutated boars come to the village the village people make Willow take the baby back to the Daikini’s or big people. Willow believes that he is a great sorcerer but the people that live in his village think poorly and negatively about him and his so called talents. The lesson that Willow is trying to teach us within his actions is don’t give up your dreams when people give up on you. Do not give up on yourself and the talents that you have because a little determination and courage you can do anything.
There are many mode lines to choose from while writing a story. Romance is the one for escapism and fantasy related ideas. In the beginning of the movie Willow, the Nelwyn Willow Ufgood finds a baby in the river, and has to go on this wild, and crazy adventure with this Daikini that he has found named Madmartigan. Along the way of his journey he meets up with two Brownies named Franjean and Rool that help him and Madmartigan on their quest to get the baby where it belongs. In the end of the movie and the end of the mode line, balance is restored to all worlds and the evil Queen Bavmorda is defeated by Willow himself. The queens’ daughter Sorsha and Madmartigan take care of the baby while Willow returns home to his family. This story is a perfect sign of the romance mode because the story is fantasy and it has the effect of escapism of the real world.
The main character that creates the whole adventure that Willow has to for take upon is the evil Queen Bavmorda. She is tall and royal and is feared by everyone in the land. She feels threatened by a baby so much that she holds all women that are expecting a child and waits to see if the baby will be born. Bavmorda is afraid of the baby because of a prophesy, stating that the baby will overthrow her rule and will defeat the evil queen. Everyone of the Daikini’s are afraid of her but the other people of the Brownies and Nelwyns do not even know of her existence or her powers. She is the perfect example of destruction and the main conflict within the story because of her actions and her affect on people.
The author always has a purpose within their writing, whether you can see it or not. Flavio Rizzardi, the creator of Willow has a hidden message within his piece. His message was to fulfill your dreams even if others doubt you. Don’t let anyone step in your way to greatness and don’t care what other people think. It’s only you and your thoughts in the end that counts. Just believe in yourself and if you set your mind to it, you can become bigger than you have ever imagined.
Not only does the author have a purpose to their writing, they also have a style. This authors style he used was based around the fantasy factor and the segregation between different people. The segregation between the Brownies, the Nelwyns, and the Daikini’s are very extreme because two types of people didn’t even know what the other type was capable of doing. But the author then creates a relationship between all three groups of people by one little piece of the puzzle. Because of the unity between all three groups of people the balance has been restored to the kingdom and they now can live on as one people.
Within a writing piece there is either a historical significance or a literary significance. In the story, Willow, there is a literary significance. Flavio Rizzardi used different types of animals, different types of symbols that most writers do not use and he made a certain twist to each part in the story. His writing of Willow has touched all of our hearts the moment the movie first begins. The plotline itself reaches us first because of the heartbreaking story of Willow, the baby Elora Danan, and Queen Bavmorda. Stories like these are only written by people who have a wide imagination and have a big heart for olden fairy tales. This author has all the skills to make the best fairy tales that involve, adventure, segregation and the power of the heart.
There are many stories that involve adventure and segregation. One story is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. In the story Frodo and his friends, Sam, Pippin, and Merry go on an adventure to destroy the ring that holds great power but also great evil. Along the way they meet up with an elf, a human and a dwarf. They are all segregated within society. The adventure leads them to new lands and new dangers. Like in Willow, there are many obstacles and medieval creatures that they must face to get to their destination. Also like in Willow the mission is completed and the worlds’ balance is restored again. There are many similarities between these two stories and the purpose for both is the same. No matter what people tell you, believe in yourself and nothing can stop you from being great.
In writing there are many aspects on making a story great. One of them is the symbols. Symbols are used to describe the story better and by creating a scene or scenes into ones’ mind. The symbols used in the story Willow, create the scene and describe what might happen next in the story. The symbols of life and happiness are the dove which flies overhead leading the way, and the baby, Elora Danan, with new life and hope for the people of the kingdom. But not all symbols are good. The mutated creatures which are used by the queen are a sign of destruction and the coming of evil. Lightening that is created by the queen herself is a sign of evil and a sign of death. The symbol magic can be used both ways. There is good magic and there is bad magic, so magic can be used for two things in the same story. In this story though the magic is used for good by Willow and the key to the queens’ demise Fin Raziel. The bad magic is used by the evil sorceress-queen Bavmorda. Magic is used in many stories as a symbol of faith and freedom.
Many stories have a lesson to be learned. Those lessons can help us in more ways than one if we think outside the box.

The Ugly Duckling Essay

Ugly Duckling Essay

A lot of people are left out of everyday life and they are treated differently because of what they look like, what they think and how they act. Those people turn out to have doubts about themselves and what their potential is. In the short story “The Ugly Duckling.”, we follow the journey of a sad little duckling that everyone treats differently because his looks are out of standards.
There are four themes of writing to choose to follow from. In this story the theme is man vs. society. It is man vs. society because the little duckling is being left out and made fun of by society. He is being treated differently because he looks different than a normal duckling should look like. Because he was born later than his siblings and he looks different from all of them and from anything that the other ducks have ever seen, he is excluded from the society that he was born into. It was so stressful and un-bearable that he decided to run away from society and live on his own to try and find his place in the world.
In many stories the author tries to teach the reader a lesson in life. The lesson that is being taught here is not to single out anyone that looks differently or acts differently from anyone else. You shouldn’t exclude anyone from anything just because they are a little different from you or your friends. If they are different from your society that you have been raised by, maybe it’s time to change your view on people because no one should be left out of anything for the wrong reasons. Being different from everyone else is a quality that we should embrace in ourselves and in others.
There can be comparisons in other writings in stories like these. One comparison of this story is the book Speak. The main character Melinda Sordino is being excluded from society because of her actions the previous summer. She cannot find her place in society and she is forced to venture through it on her own. Just like the duckling, she goes through many obstacles along the way of acceptation in society. In the end of both stories the main characters find their place in society and they are finally accepted for who they truly are. They embraced their inner beauty to get them accepted by people who are just like them.
In the modes of literature there are four mode lines to follow off of. One of the mode lines are romance, which is most commonly used beside comedy. In the beginning of the story there is a mild conflict, and in this case the ugly duckling is driven away and excluded from society because he looks differently and he acts different from everyone else. He tries to find his place everywhere around the land but he can’t find anywhere, where he is accepted. The final point on the mode line of romance is life affirming symbolism. The ugly duckling find out what he truly is on the outside and he finds others that are just like him. He is accepted by them and is proclaimed, “The most beautiful of all.” It’s true that, “he is so young and pretty.”, because the acceptance in society has told him what he really is. He is a beautiful baby swan.
Like in real life the story, “The Ugly Duckling”, has many “cliques” within it. The ducks at the pond and where he was born are two cliques that he is first has contact with. Along his journey he meets three more cliques that are all judgmental and all treat him differently. The animals that he meets at the old woman’s house treat him different because he does not act like they do. At the lake the humans’ are a clique because they acknowledge his beauty and they are different from him as well. Finally the last clique is the swans that he is now a part of. He is treated like he belongs and he does belong with his true family.
Authors mostly relate stories to themselves and what they grew up with. The author of this story, Hans Christan Andersen relates what the duck is based on from his own experiences. Andersen was born as a peasant and he was excluded out of society. Just as the ugly duckling was, Hans had to journey on his own through life and learn the ways of the world on his own. He finally found his place in his writing where he could express himself freely. He makes us look more sharply at daily life through the window of his imagination through his own experience. Hans expressed his emotions, flashes of humor, and commentaries on life and follies of human kind in his writing. He has mastered the technique of adding his own personal flare within his writings. Some experts even said that his writing was seen symbolic of his own life.
The story of, “The Ugly Duckling” relates to us in everyday life because we see people who are excluded from society because of the way that we look, the way that we think and the way that we act. People should not be excluded from anything because of how they are every day and because of qualities that they cannot change. This world is a world of perfection. People look at your looks and your weight and everything on the outside. The thing that they should really be focusing on is the qualities that the person has on the inside. We should be treated better and this society should change their views on acceptance and rejection.
“The Ugly Duckling”, shows us that our world is not perfect. That we all need to change our views on how we accept and reject people. Judge people on who they are on the inside. Don’t judge someone on the outside because people could be thinking the same things about you as you are of them.
