Art Essay

Lemon/Red Crown

There are many pieces of art made by Harvey K. Littleton. He was a glass sculpting artist. He made many pieces out of different colors, textures, shapes and sizes. The one that has an invisible meaning to me is his Lemon/Red Crown piece.
Harvey K. Littleton made this piece in 1989. It is made out of red and yellow blown glass. It has many different meanings to it. The shape of it looks like an open flower that is upside down. Each piece shows a petal that is trying to break free from the base. The artist must have wanted to break free at the time that he had created the piece. It is beautiful with its colors and textures and different interpretations of what each piece means. There are dots on some of the extensions have the original red color with a black dot in the middle. It shows that there is an eye watching you everywhere you go. Protecting you from harm and having inner peace.
The artist Harvey K. Littleton was born 1922 in North Carolina. In 1959 he began his interest in glass and how to interoperate it into art. In 1962,since he was so gifted, he lead an art blowing work shop in The Toledo Museum of Art. He was the one to demonstrate that glass could be made by artists as well as big glass producing companies. Ever since he had been offering glass blowing classes at the University of Wisconsin at his farm outside Madison Wisconsin. In 1963 he offered a graduate course and glass studio at the university that attracted students such as well known artists Marvin Liposky and Dale Chihuly. His glass pieces express himself and the life that he lead. He retired from teaching in 1976 to devote all of his free time to his art. He later produced his most famous pieces like the “Crowns” group and the “Implied and Lyrical Movement” groups.
Harvey K. Littleton has produced some of the most famous glass pieces of art in the world. He is the most talented glass artist so far. Maybe someday there might be an artist greater than him. So far that day hasn’t come yet. But it might.
